Blurb:
Five dishonored soldiers.
Former Special Forces.
One last mission.
These are the men of Hard Ink.

Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey's tattoo parlor. Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome--pure temptation to a very jaded Nick. He's left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander's daughter. Loyalty won't let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.

With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn't expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.

Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge...

Cute little story that does pretty much what the blurb says. A lot of background and worldbuilding neatly packed into quite a short story too.

The perfect Christmas swap? All Juliet, frazzled single mum and Yuletide domestic goddess, wants for Christmas is a joyful family celebration (even if she does have to wrestle with last-minute angel costume making and mad shopping centre dashes). All her single sister Gemma, an assistant director, wants is a Christmas in the sizzling Caribbean sun, away from diva actors and Hollywood tantrums. Until a sisterly squabble prompts new plans: a Christmas swap. Gemma will spend a cosy, snowy Christmas with her nieces and nephews - not to mention Juliet's gorgeous neighbour Will - whilst Juliet takes Gemma's tropical holiday and unplanned adventures. It's not the Christmas they expected, but it could be about to make all their wishes come true...

Goodreads:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/799450496

This was a lovely book to read on Boxing Day, although it would work equally well any time you wanted to curl up with something rather heart-warming. Juliet and Gemma work really well as siblings with very different experiences of the same family Christmases when they were growing up. Juliet, anxious to protect her younger sister from a disastrous Christmas as a teenager, continues her obsession with perfection into adulthood. Gemma, always aware that something wasn't right about those supposedly perfect Christmases Juliet was putting on for her, just wants to get as far away from it all as possible. Then there's an almighty row when Gemma announces that once again she won't be helping – or even visiting – Juliet's family at Christmas, a row which is ultimately resolved by the pair swapping places. Juliet has left Gemma a notebook with all the details of what needs done when, so how hard can it be? Assuming, of course that the right boxes – and only the right boxes – have been ticked on each day's page.

This was a fun story from start to finish, although I did feel that Juliet's happy ending could have done with more foreshadowing, and I'd like to have seen more about what ultimately happened to the guy she didn't end up with. One to reread for definite, though.

Christmas at the Cupcake Cafe

Audio book
ISBN 9780751550337

Blurb:
Contains mouth-watering recipes! Issy Randall, proud owner of the Cupcake Cafe, is in love and couldn't be happier. Her new business is thriving and she is surrounded by close friends, even if her cupcake colleagues Pearl and Caroline aren't quite as upbeat about the upcoming season of snow and merriment. But when her boyfriend Austin is scouted for a possible move to New York, Issy is forced to face up to the prospect of a long-distance romance. And when the Christmas rush at the cafe - with its increased demand for her delectable creations - begins to take its toll, Issy has to decide what she holds most dear. This December, Issy will have to rely on all her reserves of courage, good nature and cinnamon, to make sure everyone has a merry Christmas, one way or another...

Sequel to Meet Me at the Cupcake Café, which I reviewed here. Issy is now a successful businesswoman and is excitedly planning for Christmas even though Pearl thinks November is far too early for decorations. Meanwhile, Caroline wants the café to win first prize in the best decorated independent business contest run by a swanky magazine and Issy's boyfriend Austin has been seconded to New York, with worries that his job in London is under threat of reorganisation. Throw in the fact that his little brother is in trouble at school for being too independently-minded and the idea of staying over there permanently looks very appealing. Issy, though, wants to stay right where she is. A lovely little slice of life from a properly diverse London with lots of side trips to the US.

Blurb:
A summer of endless rain in the Peak District leaves the officers of Derbyshire's CID with a problem. They have discovered a man's body lying in shallow water, but torrential rain has swollen the rivers and flooded the roads, making travel difficult and forensic examination impossible. And that's not all. The absence of DS Ben Cooper, on extended leave after an arson attack, has left a serious gap. DS Diane Fry is a reluctant temporary replacement, but now their makeshift team is about to be tested to the limit. The fatal events of one damp August night are likely to remain shrouded in mystery if they can't track down a car glimpsed only as a dark outline in the rain by a passer-by. As the rain turns into a deluge, loyalties among the officers will be put under intolerable strain as they try to solve their toughest case yet. And that's before it emerges that Ben Cooper is not at home, but has vanished into thin air...

Goodreads:

I nearly gave up on this series after the way the last book ended, and a lot of the plot of this one revolves around the aftermath of that. I'm still not happy with the way that SPOILER*********Liz was killed off*********/SPOILER just to ramp up Cooper's angst, and Fry's dissatisfaction is getting very annoying by this point in the story arc. The main plot of this book was intriguing, but I'm only really planning to read the next one if Mum lends it to me and I want to share in her experiences of it.

Three Regency Christmases to remember:

An Earl Beneath the Mistletoe by Louise Allen
Hugo, Earl of Burnham, hates Christmas! Snowbound in widow Emilia Weston's cosy alehouse, with her young twins, he's surrounded by festive preparations. Hugo's cynical heart is in danger of being melted. How much longer can he avoid the mistletoe?

Twelfth Night Proposal by Lucy Ashford
Leaving London to claim his newly inherited estate, Theo Dalbury finds remote Derbyshire as foreign to him as his feelings for country girl Jenna. Christmas evokes painful memories for him, but Jenna is bringing out his festive spirit and will give him a yuletide that he'll never forget!

Christmas at Oakhurst Manor by Joanna Fulford
Vivien Hastings is looking forward to a quiet Christmas at Oakhurst Manor, until she realizes she'll be sharing it with Max Calderwood. It's been years since he broke her heart, but one hot glance from his cool grey eyes shows her that she's just as vulnerable to him as she ever was.

Goodreads:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/802317131

A trio of festive stories set in the snowier parts of England. Although I loved Louise Allen's story of village life in the Chiltern Hills, my favourite had to be Lucy Ashford's Derbyshire-set story as Theo's attempts to scare off his guests backfire on him but the local traditions still work to make his Christmas far more memorable than any he's experienced before. Joanna Fulford's story was less grounded in any specific geographical location, but it still left me wanting to read more of her work.
