Blurb:
An original novella introducing Jayne Fresina's charming, delightfully naughty new Regency Romance series. In the sleepy village of Hawcombe Prior, the five young ladies of the Book Club Belles Society are looking for their own leading men. When handsome, mysterious Darius Wainwright strolls into town, the Book Club Belles are instantly smitten with his brooding good looks and prideful demeanor. It's as if he walked out of the pages of their favorite new novel, a scandalous romance called Pride and Prejudice. But Miss Justina Penny has a secret – she's met this arrogant, brooding bachelor before. In Bath. The town, not the tub. Although, she was naked...

A fun bit of backstory to Once Upon a Kiss that probably works better if read after that book, even though it technically comes first in the series. Justina is always fun, though, and I can't wait to see more of her adventures.

Definitely one for fans of the series only, although I suspect they'd appreciate seeing more of the characters from the previous two books and meeting the hero of the next in the series.

"An eye for an eye, a sin for a sin"

Amid all the lies and scandals that fuel Society's gossip mill, one truth has stood out: House Rothcastle and House Windbury have always hated each other.

Lady Ava Windbury prays the feud will someday end, to no avail. One dreadful night, her brother accidentally causes the death of Christian Rothcastle's sister, a tragedy that leaves both men maimed.

Consumed by grief, Christian makes a grim decision. He will kidnap Lady Ava so that her family will feel the pain of loss as keenly as he feels the loss of his own sister. But once he has Ava in his clutches, desire takes unexpected hold. Even more surprising, she willingly surrenders to his every sexual whim after haggling over the terms of giving up her virginity.

Too late, he realizes she is using her body for peace, not war. But just as their affair of revenges turns into an affair of the heart, the past rears its ugly head to take matters into its own hands.

Warning: This book contains scenes of erotic seduction, sexual revenge and the healing power of love.

The Blood of Crows

Published by Penguin Books Ltd
Audio book
ISBN 9780141044361

Blurb:
"The Blood of Crows" is the fourth instalment in Caro Ramsay's epic Anderson and Costello series. For one Scottish cop the beat is about to get dark and very bloody... DI Colin Anderson is having a bad week. His conviction of paedophile Skelpie Fairbairn is declared unsafe -- putting Fairbairn back on Glasgow's streets and leaving Anderson under investigation. Add to this a gangster torched alive, a teenage boy tortured then dropped off a bridge and the suicide of a cop who worked an unsolved child kidnapping way back in 1996 and Anderson's got his hands full. Then one night, a young girl is tied to the river bank and left for the tide. Anderson gets there, but she dies in his arms. Working round the clock his team discover these strange crimes are linked to an elusive criminal mastermind known as The Puppeteer. But unable to find him, unable to stop the murders, Anderson is forced to follow the only lead he has -- Skelpie Fairbairn...But which is worse - The devil you don't know, or the one you do...?

Another new-to-me detective series that I'm going to have to go back and catch up with. I had my suspicions as to who were the bad apples and who their ringleader was but the resolution still came as somewhat of a surprise. And a great wholly platonic partnership between the two main characters there too.

Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives: Stories from the Trailblazers of Domestic Suspense
Edited by Sarah Weinman
Published by Penguin Books
Print book
ISBN 9780143122548

Blurb:
Fourteen chilling tales from the pioneering women who created the domestic suspense genre

Murderous wives, deranged husbands, deceitful children, and vengeful friends. Few know these characters -- and their creators -- better than Sarah Weinman. One of today’s preeminent authorities on crime fiction, Weinman asks: Where would bestselling authors like Gillian Flynn, Sue Grafton, or Tana French be without the women writers who came before them?

In Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives, Weinman brings together fourteen hair-raising tales by women who -- from the 1940s through the mid-1970s -- took a scalpel to contemporary society and sliced away to reveal its dark essence. Lovers of crime fiction from any era will welcome this deliciously dark tribute to a largely forgotten generation of women writers.

I don't think there was a story in this anthology that I didn't like. A couple of the author names were familiar to me, but all are well worth further investigation. Definitely recommended.
