Books Read and Listened To Part Two

I seem to have developed a taste for Rémy Martin. My bank balance is not going to be happy with me. On the other hand, the library has plenty of books for me to read, as well as audiobooks for the car.

Chloe needs a holiday. She's sick of making wedding dresses and her partner is having trouble at work. Her wealthy friend Gerard has offered the loan of his luxury villa in Spain - perfect. Hugh is not a happy man. His immaculate wife seems more interested in the granite for the new kitchen than in him, and he works so hard to pay for it all, he barely has time to see their children. But his old schoolfriend Gerard has lent them a luxury villa in Spain - perfect. Both families arrive at the villa and get a shock: Gerard has double-booked. An uneasy week of sharing begins, and tensions soon mount in the soaring heat. But there's also a secret history between the families - and as tempers fray, an old passion begins to resurface...

This one had me alternately amused and annoyed at the characters. I didn't particularly like any of them, but I was intrigued as to how everything would work out, or not, for them.</citesleeping>

Gillespie and I
by Jane Harris
Published by Faber and Faber
Audio book
ISBN 9780571238279

As she sits in her Bloomsbury home, with her two birds for company, elderly Harriet Baxter sets out to relate the story of her acquaintance, nearly four decades previously, with Ned Gillespie, a talented artist who never achieved the fame she maintains he deserved. Back in 1888, the young, art-loving Harriet arrives in Glasgow at the time of the International Exhibition. After a chance encounter she befriends the Gillespie family and soon becomes a fixture in all of their lives. But when tragedy strikes - leading to a notorious criminal trial - the promise and certainties of this world all too rapidly disintegrate into mystery and deception...

A most dislikeable and unreliable narrator in this one, but I kept listening in the hope that she'd get her comeupance. Not entirely sure the ending satisfied on that count.

The Chameleon Goggles

Nothing is ever dull in the Kraken’s Caribbean, at least not for very long. Emily is settling into life with her new husband in this strange new world when things heat up again! A zeppelin sighting opens the door into another realm and unlocks the gate to Captain Jezebel’s past, barricaded for decades.

The denizens of Tortuga must band together to save their world from an invasion that threatens to destroy everything they hold dear and when Jezebel disappears, Emily and the motley crew of the Cursed Quill risk everything to travel to a world where greed is king and lives chattel for the Directors and their pet scientists.

Jezebel is thrust back into the horror of her childhood, and the carefully constructed walls protecting her mind crumble. Her life in the Caribbean, her relationship with Mick…her very sanity, hang in the balance. Novan has come for their lost daughter and all her stolen inventions. What can a 17th century pirate ship do against a military airship? Even with the great Albino Kraken at their side?

I love the world the author has created here. This book was a lot darker than the first in the series, but there was some superb worldbuilding, some hints of explanations as to how everything works, and the promise of more to come in book three. Highly recommended.

Mad about the Boy?"
by Dolores Gordon-Smith
Published by Soho Constable
Audio book
ISBN 9781569475119

"Recaptures the vitality and insouciance of the Golden Age of writers."--Robert Barnard It's the height of summer, 1923. At a ball in Sussex, former Royal Flying Corps pilot Jack Haldean investigates an apparent suicide, but everything is thrown into chaos when a group of Russian revolutionaries becomes involved in the affair. In a case involving deception, greed, jealousy, kidnapping, torture, and more murder, Jack will face an agonizing choice.

Second in what appears to be a fun series, but sadly the library has none of the others on audio. I may have to get the print versions instead.
