YA Book Mini-Review: Granny Was a Buffer Girl by Berlie Doherty

I was lent this book, after borrowing and enjoying Berlie Doherty's Deep Secret.

Granny Was a Buffer Girl like Deep Secret employs a gentle tone to deal with events that at times are anything but gentle. This time the main character, Jess, is eighteen and about to leave home. At a family gathering three generations of her family reveal important secrets she has not been told before.

The story, as with Deep Secret, takes place in the recent past, encompassing in this case the middle decades of the 20th Century. None of the characters have easy lives, but the book left me with a sense of optimism and faith in humanity. As a bonus, it's set in Sheffield and deals with industries that have all but died out there.
