An Unexpected Excursion Part One

I may have had plans for a quiet Bank Holiday Monday. However, I am also one of those people who says 'drop round and stay with me whenever you want', and on Sunday morning I had a phone call from someone taking advantage of that. Seriously, it was great having someone I haven't seen in years (complete with multicoloured hair and cat ears and a fluffy rainbow tail) plus a completely new eccentric person arriving just in time for me to open a bottle of prosecco.

Monday was far too sunny for us to stay in, anyway, so we went hunting for ruined monastic buildings.

First port of call was Southwick, where we failed to find any sign of Southwick Priory, but had a lot of fun finding very old stuff in and around the church of St James without.

Outside:
St James Southwick 270513 (01) St James Southwick 270513 (03)

Old graves, and even older gravestones:
St James Southwick 270513 (04) St James Southwick 270513 (05)

Old memorial:
St James Southwick 270513 (06)

Very old tomb (we think we found 1548 amongst the very tricksy text on the top, but the guide reports more than one part to the structure):
St James Southwick 270513 (08)

Some of the older memorials on the walls:
St James Southwick 270513 (09)

St James Southwick 270513 (10) St James Southwick 270513 (11)

Some out of many mentions of the Thistletwayte family:
St James Southwick 270513 (07) St James Southwick 270513 (12)

More from our trip later in the week.
