At length, he reached the Peveril for whom he'd been named: Rupert the Cavalier. He didn't appear to have the Peveril nose, although the portraits of dukes that came before and after him had it, as did his wife. Rupert had always assumed that comments about 'not a real Peveril' or 'a Peveril by marriage only' referred to his namesake being some sort of cousin, not part of the direct male line, and hence the dukedom's numbering had restarted after the Restoration. But if this other Rupert didn't have the nose, then where had he come from? Rupert pulled out his sketchbook, and started to copy the portrait.
