After the third reading, the vicar gestured to the two altar boys and they joined him in front of the well. As he began the prayer of blessing, he took the branch from one boy, and waved it over the bowl held by the other. He dipped the branch into the bowl, and then swung round suddenly spraying the well dressing with water, all the while continuing to recite the blessing. He dipped the water in the bowl again, and threw more water over the well dressing. Then he dipped the branch into the water a third time and swung around the other way, spraying water over the crowd, most particularly over Rupert and Papa.
His prayer ended, the vicar continued to dip the branch into the bowl and throw wave after wave of spray over the now laughing crowd.
Rupert turned to look at his papa. "Is this what happens every year?"
