Slowly it became clear that they were discussing football – not one of Rupert's preferred sports, beyond the occasional kickabout when there wasn't the space for anything else.
Eventually one of the boys noticed him. "Hey, it's the new boy."
"Rupert, actually." He wanted to let them know from the start that he wasn't giving himself airs, just because Papa employed most of their parents.
"So... Rupert," another boy said, "what's your team?"
"Coventry for rugby, and Leicestershire for cricket," Rupert said automatically, before deciding he should fix on at least one local allegiance. "I'm hoping to see Derbyshire play at Queen's Park, while I'm here, though."
