On Libraries and Librarians

My nearest library is about to close for a whole month for refurbishment and the installation of automatic check-out machines. I'm not sure how I feel about any of this. The last few items I ordered online were sent to A Different Library for collection, so I went to pick them up today. Different Library still uses the old system of putting ordered books behind the librarian's desk rather than on a special self-service shelf, which confused me slightly. Then I discovered that all my library fees for items ordered had been mysteriously wiped from the computer system: confusing but sort of pleasing (I spent the money on secondhand romance novels in Oxfam later).

Different Library is not remotely within walking distance of either my house, or a convenient railway station, or a milkshake bar. It's only slightly out of my way to drive there on the way to or from other places I go to regularly, but it's also lacking in an upstairs (for the reference section and places I can use the WiFi.

But it's only a month, and then I'll have a new, improved library, possibly with fewer librarians. Which is also not good. I like checking books in and out with a person. We can exchange book recs and the like. I'm not sure I approve of these machines we've been promised.

How about you? What do you like about your library? What could be improved, or should be put back to how things used to be?
