Photos of Mysterious London

Inspired by laurawild's recent post, I made a small detour in my walk from Waterloo Station to Westminster yesterday. My goal was to find the magical steps between Milford Lane and Essex Street, but on the way I also came across another location that had almost become mythical in my mind: the Hotel Strand Continental. I stayed there for one night when I was 18 after a trip to the Marquee Club. My main memory of it was that it was above an Indian restaurant (and it still is). It was also very cheap.

And here is photographic proof that it exists:

When I finally found the steps they were as mysterious as advertised, and I'm not sure whether my camera's photos have failed to do them justice, or have picked up on the energy of the place. Judge for yourselves...

I also walked past the Savoy, but didn't have time for a cream tea or any other kind of research shenanigans. Maybe next time...
